Good Autism Practice – Autism Education Trust – Level 2 Package (session 4 of 6)

Package Objectives:

• Enable staff to develop their knowledge and understanding of Good Autism Practice – Tier 2 of the AET’s schools programme
• Provide Guidelines and activities to support staff to reflect on and improve their own practice
• Understand and explore the AET Schools Autism Standards and audit your schools practice against the standards
• An in introduction to the AET Progression Framework for Pupils on the Autism Spectrum
• An introduction to the AET Professional Competency Framework
• A certificate of Attendance will be given but attendees can obtain optional certification from AET – the evidence will be collated during the training programme.
Target audience: All teachers/ staff working with pupils with autism.

Brenda has worked in SEND schools since 2008, has SLE status in the area of SEND and is the Lead for SEND Outreach at St Martins School.

A programme over 6 afternoons (fortnightly) with school based gap tasks set between sessions. The training materials include presentation slides, film-clips, case studies, key resources, strategies and activities to encourage you to reflect and discuss your practice. Attendees will gain practical
knowledge and hands-on tools and techniques.
The themes for the programme have been taken from the Autism Education Trust Schools Programme. The DTSA have a contract as part of an AET Training hub for the Derby City Area.
The Individual Pupil. We will look at the four key areas of difference that all pupils will have
differences in; Social Understanding, Communication and Interaction, Sensory Processing and
Interests and Information Processing. We will look at meeting the needs of each individual pupil and will cover building a profile to inform the way that you work with young people with autism.
Building Relationships. This section of the training will help to understand the importance of joint working and effective communication between parents, staff and other relevant partners. We will also explore the issues relating to peer awareness and inclusion and help to identify ways to support
positive peer relationships for pupils on the spectrum.
Curriculum and Learning. Delivering an understanding of a meaningful and relevant curriculum that addresses the aspirations of the pupil on the autism spectrum. We will explore ways that you can adjust, differentiate and deliver the curriculum. Building on the strengths and interests to motive
learning and encourage participation will be key aspects of this section of the training.
Enabling Environments. Communication style will be explored and modifications and ways to
enhance the social and communicative environment and to improve learning will be discussed. We will also look at why pupils on the autism spectrum might display behaviours which can cause concern. The potential impact of learning of the physical and sensory aspects of the environment is another area, which will be explored.
AET Professional Competency Framework. The Autism Education Trust (AET) has developed this set of competencies with funding from the Department of Education in England to describe the knowledge, understanding and skills that staff working in schools and other educational settings require to work effectively with pupils on the autism spectrum. There are 57 competencies in total, 33 addressing core skills and 24 advanced competencies. There are four main topic areas and each session attendees will have a school based task to complete prior to the next session based on the competencies.
AET Autism Standards. The AET schools autism standards have been updated to reflect key legislation and aspirations in the new SEND code of practice 0-25 (2014) and the Common Inspection Framework (September 2015) in the updated version the standards have been mapped against the expectations of the SEND code of practice (2014) and the OFSTED Framework (2015) We will explore the standards and attendees will make informed choices regarding their priorities back in school.
A Progression Framework for Pupils on the Autism Framework. The Progression Framework has been designed to be accessible to practitioners in a range of settings working with pupils across the autism spectrum. The content of the framework is divided into7 main areas based on consultation and research. With optional certification at Level 2 (£50) – to be paid directly to AET, paperwork and all information will be given in the first session.
