SEND at KS1 and KS2 Programme (session 1 of 6)

Programme Objectives:
• Exploration of the causes of childhood anxiety and its manifestations. Tools and classroom activities to promote pupils’ wellbeing through the development of healthy coping strategies.
• To increase knowledge and understanding of language and communication impairments, consider the consequences for children’s learning and reflect on implications for practice.
• Using visuals as an aid to support students with SEND to understand information and as a
communication tool.
• Differentiation and Interventions for SEND in classroom setting
• An understanding of the importance of play as a foundation for communication, interaction and learning and give practical strategies to help children with SEND to develop their play skills.
• There will be school based tasks each session to build and encourage reflective practice and the last session will enable attendees to build to preparing for a staff meeting that they can have back in own schools.

 

Session 1: Wednesday 20 September 2017 will focus on understanding childhood anxiety. The causes of childhood anxiety and its manifestations will be explored. Attendees will be given access to tools and classroom activities to help pupils to manage their own mental wellbeing: promoting pupils’ wellbeing through the development of healthy coping strategies. Session 2: Wednesday 4 October 2017 will focus on Speech and Language: Promoting successful collaborative practice for teachers who work with children who have speech, language and communication difficulties. To increase knowledge and understanding of language and communication
impairments, consider the consequences for children’s learning and reflect on implications for practice. Input from a Speech and Language therapist
Session 3: Wednesday 18 October 2017 will focus on Visual Support for SEND students; we will look at software programmes to aid classroom displays and to help communication. There will be practical and theoretical elements in this session.
Session 4: Wednesday 8 November 2017 will explore practical ways to use differentiation and Interventions for SEND in classroom setting.
Session 5: Wednesday 22 November 2017 will concentrate on Developing Wellbeing through Play. For children who have communication, interaction and social impairments, ‘play’ is far from a natural process. We will focus the importance of play as a foundation for communication, interaction and learning and give practical strategies to help children with SEND to develop their play skills. Co facilitated by the Lead for Wellbeing from St Martins
Session 6: Wednesday 6 December 2017 will be school based tasks each session to build and encourage reflective practice and the last session will enable attendees to build to preparing for a staff meeting that they can have back in own schools.
