Teaching Assistants Supporting Children who are New to English (session 1 of 5)

This programme is for teaching assistants who work with children who are in the early stages of learning English. It will look at supporting New to English learners in class as well as giving ideas for effective personalised learning. We will discuss how to maximise the impact of personalised learning and discuss when different approaches to teaching are effective. The sessions will develop skills and depth of understanding through a mixture of taught input, discussion and classroom tasks. Teaching assistants will also be given guidance on how to cascade information in school. There will be a structured school based paired “lesson study” where practitioners will have the opportunity to visit each other’s schools and discuss learning within a varying context. The headteacher is invited to attend the final session.
The taught sessions will cover:
• Working with the class teacher to support the planning progress
• Assessment for learning and target setting
• Facilitating effective peer support
• Promoting talking
• Explicit and implicit language and vocabulary teaching
• Scaffolding learning
• Pedagogy backed up by research
• SEN and EAL
